More than 9,000 Afghan refugees are at Ft. Dix, being processed over the next few months. When they are cleared to leave, many will remain in New Jersey. We are in weekly contact with the International Rescue Committee, Church World Service and other agencies about the current status. In the meantime, we are getting prepared to welcome families to a safe and secure life in Morris County. We are looking for suitable and affordable housing and seeking and training volunteers. We continue to receive many generous financial donations. At this time, we are not seeking donations of clothing, household goods, toys, etc. The time may come when we reach out for items like that, but not yet.
What we do need right now is organizations willing to sponsor families, with our support. If your organization would like to know more about what this involves, please email us at info@rampnj.org. We are also looking to beef up our executive team by adding people experienced in non-profit management, marketing, social media communications, and finance.
Since 2016, RAMP has successfully supported six families – more than 20 people – as they transition to lives of security and success in the United States. They have secure jobs, the children are getting good educations, and they know that RAMP members love them and have become good friends. With your continuing help, we can continue to make a difference.

Chair, RAMP
"God of love and compassion, may be always recognize your spirit: in the refugee family, seeking safety from violence; In the migrant worker, bringing food to our tables; in the asylum-seekers, seeking justice for their families; in the unaccompanied child, traveling in a dangerous world. Give us hearts that break open whenever our brothers and sisters turn to us. Give us hearts that no longer turn deaf to their voices in times of need. Give us eyes to recognize a moment for grace instead of a threat. Give us voices that fail to remain silent but which decide to instead to advocate prophetically. Give us hands that reach out in welcome, but also in work, for a world of justice until all homelands are safe and secure. Bless us, O Lord." -- Prayerist

The administration’s recent disheartening Presidential Determination, which lowered the refugee arrival ceiling to 18,000 in 2020, has left refugee families and those who support them with many questions.

![]() 2018 YEAR-END FAMILY UPDATESRAMP stories of peace, hope, courage, generosity and love.Dear friends, members and supporters of RAMP,
It seems as though all the news we hear today consists of the evils of war, genocide, hunger and suffering. What follows are the stories of three families. These stories are filled with dreams of peace, hope, courage, generosity and love. I hope they will be meaningful for you. 2018 has been a wonderful year for RAMP. Our first family, from Syria, is striving for independence at this time. Our other two families, both from Afghanistan, have adapted to their new country quickly and beautifully. In this season of peace, love, joy and hope for a better world, RAMP has attempted to live out these values and make a difference. We look forward to 2019 in the hope of continuing to help those we have welcomed to their new land and to welcome new friends yet unknown to us. Thank you for all you have done to make these dreams come true. Gratefully, Gerry Gannon, RAMP Coordinator |

The family continues to settle in and adjust to life in their new home. Two of the children, ages 6 and 8, are enrolled in school. The 18-year- old son has a job in a pizza parlor. The father, who has a construction background, has had some temporary jobs and is seeking something more permanent. The mother, who has worked as a hairdresser, may seek a job in that field or in something else. A most urgent need is to find employment for the father. Anyone with job leads should contact RAMP at info@rampnj.org.
RAMP volunteers have been busy helping the family with social services, medical needs, and education. The entire family has been undergoing intensive English as a Second Language instruction. There is an urgent and continuing need for more drivers, tutors and translators. Since the family does not drive, a RAMP volunteer must take them to all of their appointments. Translators also are needed on a regular basis for all their interactions with social service agencies, doctors, dentists, etc. Volunteers in these areas may contact RAMP at info@rampnj.org on the website at www.rampnj.org.
Finally, a dinner is planned for April 1 at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship to meet and honor the family. More details will be forthcoming.
